I decided to walk down the Trabuco Creek trail. I hadn't gotten more than 100 yards down the trail when I heard what sounded like the piping calls of a Pygmy Nuthatch, so I walked back up the trail and started walking up (north) Main Divide Road. About 100 yards down along the road I heard them again, and saw four small birds fly out of the upper reaches of some Coulter Pines to a point further down the road. I tracked them down and was able to confirm the presence of two Pygmy Nuthatches, but never saw or heard more than two birds at once. At least one bird remained in the area until about 10:30 (when I left the first time), ranging from the gate at the Los Pinos trailhead to just past the first bend in the road where the road moves away from the pines (a total distance of 0.2 miles). Relatively small bird, spent most of its time buried in needle clusters in the upper reaches of the Coulter Pines, though occasionally seen creeping along the trunk or branches. Gray crown with a contrasting blackish eyeline, creamy white under parts, blue-gray upper parts, relatively short tail, and moderately long, heavy, chisel-tipped bill.
