~5th Hidalgo County record! Continuing since this morning when it was found by Ryan Rodriguez! As soon as we walked up to the intersection where Ryan found it (26.1942416,-98.2174294), we could hear it making non-stop ‘pip pip’ calls and then saw it sallying for bugs from the oak treetops near a Brown-crested Flycatcher and Couch’s Kingbirds. Larger pewee with tall, wispy crest; orange lower mandible, black upper mandible; grayish-yellow undersides, brownish-gray topsides. Three previous records in the county were overwintering birds, and this is the second April record. Photos and audio.
