Seen from the wharf. 43.918651,-64.840339 But moved toward the fish plant, heading toward Carters beach, as the tide dropped. Medium sized duck, solid black back, with a small tuft off the back of its head. Not the "square tuft" look of most hybrid birds. Full white flash in wing seen in flight when bird was flushed by incoming lobster boat. Bird was associating with Black Scoters, no other Aythya present. Nail on end of bill looked wider than on greater scaup. Bill was darker toward head, lighter at end before black wide nail. It was foggy while I was viewing this bird, so lighting wasn't great and the bird was never closer than 300m away. Usually 500m plus. Poor quality doc shots. Not sure if they show enough to rule out hybrid. Hope someone else sees this bird and can get better photos. I will gladly change the ID if I'm wrong. But the only thing going against it from what I saw, was the short tuft.
