Black Scoter December 14, 2024 8:43 a.m. Lat 29 deg 44' 57.258" N, Long 93 deg 39' 49.086" W - Mae's Beach Observers: Sherrie Roden sroden@gt.rr.com, Harlan Stewart hstewartmail@gt.rr.com Length of sighting: 9 minutes Weather: bright overcast temperature appoximately 60 F, wind gusting to about 20 mph Light conditions: bright overcast, unlimited visiblity Optical equipment: Nikon Z9 with Nikkor 800 mm f6.3. Habitat: sandy beach near tidal margin Behavior: intermittently walking and resting on sandy beach - apparently injured or ill, tolerating close approach ( est 16 ft.) Description: All dark duck with white cheek plumage extending from bill past auriculars and from immediately below eyes to lower jaw line Similar species and how they were eliminated: Immature Surf Scoters and White-winged Scoters have much less white plumage on head.
