Shortly after I arrived at the dock a boat came near and one of the occupants mentioned being surprised to see a pair of Surf Scoters. I was somewhat doubtful, not knowing at the time that one was a birder. After scoping the area I eventually spotted them very far out not with the other waterfowl. The campground would have afforded better views, but it is closed. That white nape on black looking duck can be seen at a distance and rules out BLSC and WWSC. Thanks for the alert Marcus Cade, a local birder, who came over later to introduce himself when his party was docking! Most time was spent trying to get an ID shot for reviewer. Very poor photo shows white nape and white forehead.
