Wail and hoot call by barred owl on Ole Lake Road at 2117 hrs on 1 Nov 24. At least two other barred owls heard calling in the distance at this site during the first 5 minutes of my 15-minute stay. The owl giving the Wail & Hoot call was by far the closest to me, and called during my 4th minute at the stop. It was not heard again. The brief "pre-wail wail" was quite atypical; I don't believe I've ever heard such an introductory note before. Following the full wail, the owl gave one stereotypic sequence of muffled hoots. Although a single sequence is not unusual, most calls that I've heard give two or three such sequences consecutively.

At the fourth stop (0.9), one owl gave a wail & hoot call to the SSW in my first 10 seconds at the stop, and a second gave a solo long hoot in the last 10 sec of the 10th minute. At the fifth stop (1.2), at least three (and probably four) barred owls heard, at least two of which were new (based on direction and distance). In the first 5 minutes, one gave a stuttered hoot in the distance to the SE, at least one was giving "who cooks for you" singlets and doublets in the distance to the E, and a third gave a wail & hoot at very close range to the ESE (recording). This third bird was possibly one of the two heard on the preceding count; the other two confirmed at this point are considered new birds, for a total of 4 on the route.
