I was here hoping to find this species; as I was walking back down the road, I heard tapping on a tree nearby, and got brief visuals of one individual. Black crown, nape, and cheek, with narrow white stripe on the lower part of the cheek. Ca HAWO-size; solid black back. Heard tapping from a second tree in the vicinity but was not able to locate that bird. The individual I was watching flew up the draw, and I continued down, and a few minutes later I saw two BBWO, a male and a female. I got excellent looks at both, particularly the female, which was foraging on a Douglas-fir not far from the road; the male later flew to the same tree while the female remained. Extensive evidence of bark-flaking on many trees along the portion of the draw I walked. I suspect, but am not positive, that the first individual I saw was different from the pair I observed.
