I heard what I assumed was a Lazuli Bunting singing at 9:00 am where the trail crosses a large brushy talus slope / forest clearing at 4610 ft elev, but Indigo Bunting was identified in repeated Merlin sound IDs. I walked through trees along the trail a short distance upslope into the clearing to get a better view, finally spotting a male singing from conspicuous high perches in trees. Photos were difficult due to shadow of the ridgeline on the east side of the clearing and sky backlighting. I lost it when it moved and stopped singing after 20 minutes, but spotted it singing again briefly when I returned up the trail 2 hours later. Though out of the shadow, still backlit by the brighter sky. Despite the backlighting, it's clear the underside is all dark and no wing bars.
