Unexpected. Initially drawn to the big ash tree upon hearing a soft, slightly uneven trill with a moderate tempo. Reminiscent of a Wilson's Warbler song - che-che-che-che - but longer in duration and slightly uneven with the notes of the song alternating up and down slightly in pitch from one note to the next. The song seemed unlike Orange-crowned or Wilson's Warbler and sort of like a Tennessee but lacking in the hard ti-ti-ti-ti notes at the end of the trill that I am more accustomed to hearing on Tennessee songs. Thinking this was potentially something good, I searched the tree for some time before locating the source. Spent nearly an hour tracking this very sluggish individual as it moved mid canopy through the tree, sometimes perched in the open singing, other times buried deep in the foliage. Dully white underparts from throat through breast, belly, and undertail. Blackish legs and feet. The vent, flanks and center of throat had a faint yellow wash. Tail was dark gray to blackish and remarkably short insofar as very little of it projected beyond the undertail coverts. It was even shorter tailed in comparison to the Warlbing Vireos present but still lankier in body plan. The lower cheek was a dull white like the underparts. A narrow dusky ocular line ran from the gape to the black eye and backward to the auricular area. A narrow whitish supercilium extended over the eye and separated the ocular line from the cool gray of the crown. Bill was dark gray and sharply pointed. The tip of the lower bill seemed to be broken off which I think shows in some of the photos. From below it looked very much like a Red-eyed Vireo but the bill looked much too pointy and sharp tipped for a vireo. The song was also wildly off the mark for a vireo but like that of a wood warbler. After considerable effort, I was able to discern some lime green fringing on some of the coverts on the otherwise plain dark gray wings. Twice as the bird moved about I was able to glimpse a bright lime green back and rump.
