After mating, the female returned to the East side of this stand of trees, and I heard some pecking. (The downy woodpecker female was often working nearby at the same time, so I can't be sure who was working.) I moved around the stand and was able to observe the female sapsucker hybrid doing a little work at one nest hole, and also moving around the tree foraging, and looking into other holes. While this individual's appearance is broadly that of a male red-naped sapsucker, I did see her mating with the male. Also, her black 'mustache' stripe is longer and more complete than a male red-naped sapsucker's; and the white under her beak, while less prominent than in a non-hybridized female RNS, seems definitive enough. The sapsucker is a few feet above her own nest hole, foraging and investigating other holes on the tree. By this point a male white-breasted nuthatch who may be nesting in the tree may have attracted her attention if not her ire.

Hybrid male and female copulating after male crooned sweetly repeatedly to summon her; a while later the female worked on their nest hole, and climbed around the tree looking into other nest holes. She made some territorial gestures toward a white-breasted nuthatch male who was carrying food to the tree (where w.b. nuthatches were also nesting last summer) and grew agitated. Once she had become irritated by this nuthatch, she even seemed a little displeased with the downy woodpecker female working on her nest hole one tree over in the same glade, and I left to avoid any chance of increasing her upset.
