観察結果の詳細
From the boat launch area along the Kennebec, a large raptor was observed perched on a log in the mud quite some distance away (scope views required). It was presenting a side profile with a decidedly smaller dark bill (not large like an eagle) and whitish/mottled head with a dark bar behind the eye. Otherwise, the bird was mottled brown above and creamy/buffy below (not easy to discern due to the side-profile view). The tail area appeared dark (but dark wing primaries could have obscured the tail). It did not fly during observations. There was an adult osprey perched high in a tree nearby, as well as bald eagles around the area. Discussion centered around: could the bird could be an osprey or a rough-legged hawk? It appeared to this observer that this bird was an osprey (though somewhat "disheveled" in appearance). One thing to note: all ospreys migrate to Maine in spring as adults. Distant photo obtained.
