Unbeknownst to me this bird was discovered at Gull Point a couple of days before my visit. I think Dowitcher identification can be tricky and I’m certainly no expert, so I was pleased to learn that I had not misidentified the bird! I observed the bird in good light with my scope. During my observation, the bird spent its time alone working along the edges of the inner pools not too far from the new viewing platform. The bird is a medium to large shorebird, with an exceptionally long bill. It is a little larger than a Killdeer, but not as stocky/robust. There were several Killdeers nearby. At times, the bird appeared to have a ‘bump’ on its back, the ‘swallowed a grapefruit look’. The overall color impression was noticeably red/orange. Clean scapulars with black centers and white tips were prominent (see photos). No sewing machine behavior was seen. The bird was silent. I think this is an adult bird moving into breeding plumage.
