We drove back and forth slowly along the fence line along Soda Lake Rd. just north of the turnoff to KCL campground at/near the eBird Lark Bunting Stake-out 2023-2024. There were scattered groups of sparrows and occasionally, one, two and up to five Lark Buntings visible at once among the sparrows. When they got startled, as when a car went by, they flew uphill or just across the road into low brush or on the ground. After going to KCL campground we came back and drove slowly along the fence line again. The last time we passed we saw a group of five fly away from the fence with several more from the ground or brush joining them to be a group of about nine. We estimated a total of 9-12. There were some pale, mostly brown birds, but also 4 or 5 which were noticeably darker, beginning to get more of the black feathers of adult male alternate plumage. We also drove along the fence line on a dirt road which angled off toward the northwest slightly to the north of the fence along Soda Lake Rd., but we did not see any Lark Buntings there.
