Center frame, just right of the phragmites stalk in the foreground. Overall brownish color shows best in this photo — compare plumage to typical 1st winter Ring-billed far right frame.

Presumed 1st cycle on mudflats with Ring-billed and Californias. Small, petite gull. Slim-bodied appearance with long wings. Dingy brown overall, much more so than nearby immature Ring-bills particularly on breast/underparts. Accentuated “dark-eyed” appearance. Relatively slim bill, bi-colored with pinkish base and dark tip. Upper parts mostly light brown in flight, slightly darker wingtips reminiscent of 1st winter Thayer’s. Wasn’t able to get great detail off flight feathers. Some gray starting to come in on the mantle. Interesting tail pattern, with traces of white or very pale feathering but couldn’t make out clearly while battling strong gusts. The group of gulls picked up 10-15 minutes after our arrival, heading west/southwest towards the lake. I believe this was a good candidate for a Short-billed Gull. No DSLR camera with us, unfortunately. Great scope views between gusts, from which notes were drafted. Atrocious digi-scopes don’t portray the bird well, enough so that I’ve second guessed myself into Larus sp. Gulls man. Hopefully it will turn up again
