観察結果の詳細
Including four very dark individuals, apparently stained, possibly by chimney soot. The two darkest individuals, both males, had dark gray coloration concentrated on the head, back, and breast. A female had some dark coloration on the breast and head. These three individuals were photographed. A fourth individual had dark coloration only on the cap. The feathers appear unkempt and matted, suggesting that the dark coloration is due to staining rather than melanism. In the best photo, glimmers of normal coloration are visible where the staining hasn't reached. The uropygial oil is unable to perform its job of sealing the feather vane, so they wind up out of place and to become somewhat stuck to each other. The house the birds were hanging around had a chimney putting out smoke, and the grate at the top had holes in it, so it's possible the birds could have gone in there and become covered in soot.
