視聴覚メディア・ノート

Four solo long hoots from a barred owl perched about 20 meters from me. A second owl was calling simultaneously well to the east, giving both solo long hoots and stuttered hoots. Within a few minutes of the 4th call by the near bird, it flew off.

観察結果の詳細

Detected at 8 stops, with detection at two of the stops most likely birds first heard at previous stops. Stop 1 (0.0) --After my first bout of tooting, at least two owls erupted in a cacophonous chorus of hoots, caws, and caterwauling to the NW of the intersection which carried through my second bout of tooting. After the third bout of tooting, a wail was heard from the same direction, which might have been the intro wail of a BAOW wail-n-hoot call (most likely) or perhaps a NSWO wail. Running total of 2 owls. Stop 3 (1.0) -- During the first 5 minutes, a distant BAOW gave a brief bout of hooting to the SE; I could not discern with certainty what hooting pattern it was, but it ended with "hoo-aw." Running total of 3. Stop 4 (1.5) -- During the first 5 minutes, at least one owl (though possibly 2) gave four solo long hoots fairly close to me. I then heard four more to the north-northeast and growing increasingly faint (i.e., moving north). I tallied these detections as a single owl. Running total of 4. Stop 5 (2.0) -- During the second 5 minutes at the stop, I heard several solo long hoots very distant to the E, possibly the same owl as detected at the last stop. Still running total of 4. Stop 6 (2.5) -- During the first 5-minute interval, I heard two stuttered hoots ("hoo-hoooo") to the N at medium distance. Running total of 5. Stop 7 (3.0) -- Late in the first minute, I saw a large owl flying south up the road toward me, silhouetted against the starry sky. I hit it with my flashlight beam and watched as it flew into a perch half-way up a tall deciduous tree about 20 m from me. I then killed the light, and began giving my standard 3 bouts of NSWO tooting. After I had completed them, a BAOW began calling to the east, ultimately giving 7 solo long hoots and 8 stuttered hoots by the end of the 10-minute stop. Partway through that series, I again briefly turned on my flashlight and found the near bird still at the same perch, which meant the calling from the east was a second bird. Shortly after extinguishing my light, the near owl gave 4 solo long hoots. Even knowing the bird was there, the first SLH was quite startling. After the 10-minute mark, the bird to the east continued hooting, but I heard nothing more from the near owl. After a couple of minutes, I again turned on the flashlight, and found that the near owl had left; I had missed its departure even though I had been watching the tree the entire time. Running total of 7. Stop 8 (3.5) -- During the 9th minute, I heard a stuttered hoot well to the south of me. I assumed it was probably one of the two from the previous stop. Still running total of 7. Stop 10 (4.25) -- In the 10th minute, a BAOW gave an atypical wail-n-hoot call to the NE. The preliminary wail was more robust than a typical wail--more like a yowl. The subsequent hoot series was very extended, with at least four rounds of the typical hooting pattern, interspersed at one point with a crude "who cooks for you" call. Grand total of 8 Barred Owls on this route.
