With White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows by the side of the trail, midway along the east side of the lake, around (37.4220, -122.1739). Around the wooden fence enclosing a private house and yard—this house is labeled "Lake House" on Google Maps. First seen when it popped out among White-crowned Sparrows hopping through dense, shrubby trees in this yard, including live oaks, strawberry trees, and toyon bushes, whose berries some of the sparrows were eating. I only got brief, obstructed views at first, so I hung around for a while and watched the sparrows, trying to get better views and photos. Eventually most of the sparrows flew out of this yard and settled around the edges of the path and under the bushes to the southwest, where they foraged in the leaf litter, giving somewhat better viewing opportunities. Not much streaking on the underparts, so a tan-striped adult, I think, unless a first-winter bird could have lost some of its streaking by now.
