Large and mostly gray with long notched tails. Six females with mossy yellow-green heads and rumps; at least one was russet. One male with rosy head and mantle. Intense look about the eyes, lower white eye-arcs. Eating Mountain Ash berries. Tame. Seven birds and then six more a quarter mile apart, so probably thirteen, but conservatively, seven. A mile and a quarter from the north gate on groomed snowshoe trails about here for the first seven birds: 41.385307, 111.924340 and on the slope that descends through the Weber Ropes Course. The others were on the same slope, but a tougher-to-reach spot. The grosbeaks were very musical, but sadly, Merlin ID'd one recording as an American Robin and couldn't come up with any suggestions for five more recordings. Poor Merlin. I'm including a picture of the berry detritus the birds always leave on the snow when eating Mountain Ash berries--a sure sign that they've been present. Most of the other winter berry eaters eat their berries whole and don't leave skins and bits behind.
