Continuing wintering bird; discovered by Tom F on 12/3/23. Thanks, Tom!! :)) Adult male; superficially like the adult, male Townsend’s Warbler (TOWA) nearby with its black throat against a bright yellow face, bold white wingbars against black wings, yellowing by the vent, and a white underbelly with thick black streaks along its flanks. However, its bright yellow head lacks a black mask, but instead has dull, olive auriculars and crown; the bright yellow stops at the throat without bleeding onto its chest; white flecking on its black throat; and short, white undertail coverts. Due to the angle of observation, I was not able to view its back and only had brief views of its crown. This particular subject has a messy face, with it missing feathers around its bill, especially by the lower mandible, in comparison to the pics when it first arrived. 1220 – I first heard a strange ‘tink’, and ended up tracking a TOWA in the Pepper trees that lined the western side of Chrisanta Dr approx. here (33.6042058, -117.6740177). However, once the TOWA flew across the street, I continued to hear the ‘tink’ calls and sure enough, the Black-throated Green (BTNW) was foraging in the upper canopies of the Peppers, periodically vocalizing. Solo and very active. Last seen flying NW towards an Olive tree adjacent to the service road. **my Merlin Sound ID was not on at the time, but I’m assuming it would pick up its vocalization**
