Edit: Initially identified as a slaty-backed gull but ID changed for need of further documentation. Searched for this bird again on Wednesday (01/10) with no luck. Original field notes: Large gull with mantle shade comparable to Wymani Western gulls (Darker than occidentalis and California gulls). Most noticeable was the very wide secondary skirt and large tertial crescent. Pale eye and some streaking around the eye and hind neck seen in scope. Initially suspected some flavor of glaucous-winged hybrid but the darker mantle suggested otherwise. A considerable amount of white on the underside of folded primaries. Head rather flat and herring-like rather than bulbous and small-eyed like Glaucous-winged or Western, and bill rather slim and parallel with seemingly small gonys. Unfortunately, the overcast and windy conditions and approaching dusk precluded good documentation. Additionally, birds were very distant in the field so views were limited and images or scoped or ultra-zoomed through a bridge camera. Have a couple of very shaky videos with excessive wind noise. Sadly no open-wing shots, and birds dispersed to sewage lagoons shortly after this observation. Hope this bird sticks around and someone refinds.
