*Very late, but one of a number of birds lingering late this winter in Massachusetts. One was even seen on the Quincy CBC last weekend. Recorded chatter call. Smallish wren with faded/faint supercillium that's light brown instead of gleaming white on CARW, warm brown wings with barring but no white spots. Light underparts that are more a faded brown, not warm buffy like CARW, and no streaking/barring on the underparts (unlike WIWR). Faint white eye ring visable from some angles, mainly when in shadow. Longer tail and longer bill than WIWR (loud rattle call also ruled out WIWR). I heard an explosive rattle call at close range, and started recording with Merlin, thinking "this'll be a solid recording of a CARW with the lack of wind". Even though it was crystal clear Merlin wasn't offering up any species suggestions, and I started thinking "hang on, this does actually sound more like a House Wren than Carolina", and switched to trying to get a photo. The bird didn't want its picture taken, but I was able to get a few doc shots through the bushes and thickets. No other birds were around it. Third latest Norfolk County record on eBird - latest in December, but 1 January and 1 February record previously.
