***MEGA; overdue first Maine record found just beyond brewery near start of Lobster Cove trail. Initially heard calling as MRW and I were separated from JRT by ~200 ft; we were walking north and he was recording a whisper-singing Winter Wren back near the start of the trail. We all separately heard a short “pip” (most similar to Alder Flycatcher), given several times, at which point I thought JRT might have been playing a recording (he was not). I think something subconsciously clicked as Hammond’s with the call but not sure I could describe the difference and even Alder would be interesting at this date! We ran back and saw an Empid briefly in the bushes before it dropped down; this quick view was enough to confirm that it was a Hammond’s Flycatcher but we needn’t have worried. The bird stopped calling but we had extended views at close range for the next ~15 minutes before we lost it heading in the direction of the Wyeth house. It stuck around in the same general area until our last day on the island, 18 October. Visually, we were struck by the large head, puffy crown, large eye, and small dark bill, imparting a rather kinglet-like appearance. Very long primaries accentuate rather short tail. Fairly saturated olive-colored upperparts and olive-yellow wash below.
