While I was about to get to the flats, I was initiated into a needless side-quest wherein some strangers regaled me with a story of how they lost a pair of jet-skis the night before. Apparently, they "had a rough night" and ran their jet-skis aground some point before dawn on a sandbar. From what they told me, as of this morning they had only been able to find one, which had washed up on a nearby marsh island. It's worth mentioning that they were still wearing their life-jackets at 10:45 am, leading me to believe they hadn't slept or otherwise left the beach since their trouble began. They asked me to take their phone number and let them know if I find their jet-ski. Anyway, as this was happening, a juv buff-breasted sandpiper dropped in and landed on the beach, probably 50-feet from where we three were standing. I could tell exactly what it was without binoculars and it caused me to get very antsy while I was being asked to undertake this additional task. Unfortunately, by the time I took their phone numbers and agreed to assist in this new quest, the bird repositioned itself down the beach a little bit! Finally, I was able to track the bird down and it was quite a beauty: a seemingly upright Calidris with warm smooth face and underparts with a very well-patterened, scalloped back, short bill, and "cute face." I took some photos, but then some joggers flushed the bird a little bit down the beach. Also, if anyone finds a blue Yamaha jet-ski please let me know.
