A male heard calling organically when we arrived at this location (-8.6230199, 120.5191582): a short, very grating single-noted call, given at short intervals. We then tried a couple of bouts of playback, eventually obtaining sterling looks at this sharp-looking bird. Interestingly, it never vocalized in response to playback and didn't actually approach the speaker. We found the bird hopping along a downed tree trunk and, lastly, teed up superbly on a broken-off stump, providing fantastic views and affording AJB a great photo op. CLR snapped a habitat shot to upload later. Perhaps agitatedly, it jerked its tail upwards quickly (to a cocked posture, which it then held) and then, in due time, snapped it back downwards to a natural resting position. This bird reminds me a bit of tapaculos in the Neotropics, in both appearance and habits (including the short white eyebrow, which comes and goes across species). We later heard another bird in an impenetrable trailside thicket: -8.6244297, 120.5213818.
