Paul spotted this juvenile peep at a great distance and we both agreed it was very likely a Semipalmated Sandpiper given it was a juvenile that showed a uniform grayish-brownish dorsum with fine whitish edging, brownish crown and ear coverts, and apparently short bill. We then moved closer to the bird as it fed on the easternmost exposed mudflat and reconfirmed characters. The bird then moved to a nearer mudflat, and we studied it further as other observers arrived. The bill was indeed short and blunt at the tip, the upperparts lacked any rufous in the upper scapulars. The crown and ear coverts were brownish and unlike the same areas that were grayer and paler or even whiter on the few juvenile Westerns here. The underparts were clean white with blurred grayish-brown smudging at the breast sides (versus this area being more clearly but dilutely streaked on Western). The clean white underparts allowed us to spot this bird more readily at a distance where most peep were adult Westerns and Leasts. The bill was indeed short and blunt. I felt it was on the short end of what I see in the East for Semipalmated, but Paul felt it was moderately longer than even the shortest bills on Semipalmateds that occur along the West Coast. At some angles, we could discern a slightly swollen bulge at the bill tip. The legs were black. The tertials nearly covered the short black primary extension. We did not hear the bird call, but that was probably due to the distance and our hearing abilities.
