When we initially saw the flock of crossbills fly in I noticed that at least 1 was making a call similar to what I had heard previously with Cassia Crossbills in Idaho. So I immediately tried to get a recording to analyze latter. Once I got to the hotel, I edited my recording truncating noise off the beginning and the end. I then amplified the recording. No other editing was involved. Once I uploaded the audio to the checklist I compared the sonogram to those of cassia reported in both Colorado & Idaho and saw that one of the calls was a perfect match for a Cassia. It was at this point we reached out to 2 different biologists that are birders in CO. The one had recently reported Cassia in Colorado too. They both said we appeared to have both type 5 & Cassia in our recording, but recommended we get additional opinions. Gino sent off the recording to a contact at Cornell / eBird that replied back it was a Cassia. He also sent it off to a university professor that is conducting research on crossbills who replied back that he too was hearing type 5 AND Cassia in the recording. In our discussions regarding Cassia in Colorado we’ve been told that they typically they are found above 9,000’ elevation. We were at 11,080’. After conferring with 4 different highly regarded birders / biologists we are confident we had at least 1 cassia in the flock.
