Singing vociferously from clay Bottom Pond overlook of the canopy walkway. Slightly gruff "swit, per-rill" song. Slightly lower pitched and cadence than typical Red-eyed. Also gruffer. Seen well by all in the group. Chunky Vireo with dark eye and obvious dark malar "whiskers. Rare, but increasingly detected (in the past decade in particular) spring migrant on the Gulf coast of Texas, though this appears to be the first (or one of very few) records of the in Texas for June/July. The species seems to be increasingly detected along the Louisiana coast (particularly in the Delta region), including a pair lingering into mid-June in Cameron Parish last year (2022). This may be a part of that trend, though observer effort is certainly a factor as well.
