Apparent Townsend’s Warbler. I first saw this bird at the top of a bushy tree that also had plenty of goldfinch and maybe some CEDW. It was a brief look, facing me, not a side view. Black ear patches on each side of the face with a black throat. Aside from the black parts, the face was yellow. Some black streaking extending down from the sides of the chest. The black throat stopped at the top of the chest, didn’t seep down. The black cheek/ear patches were fairly large, roughly the same size as the black throat. Didn’t get time to study other features. Right away I recognized this bird as a TOWA, a bird I semi-recently saw in Arizona. At the same time, I knew TOWA was extremely unlikely so I was left in a contradictory state of thinking I definitely saw a TOWA and thinking I definitely did not see a TOWA. Anyway, after my brief view of the bird it darted over to a row of conifers in a fast, direct flight that covered ~40m. I could not get another visual on the bird, but I did hear it sing. So I pulled out my phone and hit record (on voice memos not Merlin lol). At this point I was already excited at the thought of having seen a TOWA, but did not know what TOWA sounded like. Since it was kind of a buzzy song, variations of black throated green/blue warblers came to mind (even though they were incompatible with the visual). But then I checked Townsend’s recordings and they seemed like a closer match, although it was tough to listen closely to recordings in the field. Then when I got back to my car (and away from all the mosquitoes, which were very distracting) I kept listening to the recording and comparing it to the second song here, https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Townsends_Warbler/sounds, and dang it was an even better match than I realized. I’d say very solid! The rising buzzy notes with the funky clinking/more chirpy ending (though the very end gets interrupted by a waxwing in my recording… not to get confused with the main song). At this point I thought it would be an unbelievable coincidence if I saw a bird that I immediately recognized as TOWA then, after I was already feeling the woozy TOWA excitement/disbelief, happened to get a recording of the bird that sounded like a very solid match for TOWA… unless I did in fact see/hear TOWA. So while I try to be skeptical of my eyes/ears when they suggest something that shouldn’t be here (esp. with no photo), the striking visual combined with the audio evidence leads me to what seems like the only logical conclusion: a Townsend’s Warbler at Claireville Conservation Area. Hopefully it will still be here tomorrow. I dropped a pin on the discord. Thanks to others who chimed in with input on the audio!
