Thank you for writing and of course I am happy to share my thoughts on this bird. The short answer is that it is a Mountain Plover. ... The structure is perfect for Mountain Plover including the bill size/shape, head shape, and other features. Other marks that support this i.d. are the dark cap with contrasting white supercilium, the white forehead and throat, white underparts with a hint of darkness on the flanks, dark folded primaries, and the dark rectrices. It is too bad the photos aren't sharper, but from what I can see this is most likely an adult (from the previous year) that is in the midst of its molt to alternate plumage. Pre-alternate molt in this species is in Mar/Apr so the timing is perfect. As an aside, I remember hearing about this bird at the time - I try to monitor all out-of-range reports of this species. A neat record.
