Today’s pleasant surprise. I have to thank a Red-tailed Hawk for this finding. I saw a distant hawk perching N of Reservoir from SW corner. Although it didn’t suggest anything other than Red-tail, this was my first raptor of the day, I decided to have a closer look. As I was getting closer to the Red-tailed hawk (juvenile) perching in a tree in fenced-in area N of Reservoir, I saw small raptor briefly flying and landed in a tree behind the Red-tail. Thinking a probable Kestrel I shifted my attention and looked for it. I didn’t find anything where I thought it landed but as I looked around I saw a small dark streaky raptor perching in tree W of Tennis Center Building. It was a Merlin! Several Blue Jays came very close to it and started bothering (not vocally), eventually Merlin flew across the tennis courts to the other side and landed in a tree there. A couple of Blue Jays followed and again bothered it, Merlin flew up again and circled back and flew right over me and landed at the top of tree by the Bridle path near the bridge by N Pump house, I walked over the bridge to Reservoir side, a Blue Jay landed near the Merlin and Merlin again flew and landed In a tree E of the bridge. It stayed there for a few minutes but again bothered by a Blue Jay and Merlin flew N across the tennis courts being followed by a Blue Jay. I stayed in the area for another 5 min or so but couldn’t relocate it after that. Interesting thing was Blue Jays never were vocal during all this. It was more like physical challenges to intimidate the small raptor. I wouldn’t have found this Merlin if It wasn’t for the distant Red-tailed Hawk. It was still perching at the exact same spot when I left.
