Hawks would sit in Juniper trees out of sight of the feeders. They would suddenly swoop down to the feeders and try to pluck a bird from the ground or from the feeder. We saw him take a junco. The juvenile Sharp-shinned Hawk has been hanging around our house for about two months. We see him sitting in the juniper trees behind our house. Then we see him fly to the front of the house to try to catch a bird from the bird feeder. If he is successful, he takes the bird back to a tree behind the house to eat it. We have about 4 acres of pinon -juniper forest and we see him out the window early in the morning. he may change his position, but may be nearby at any time. If we notice the birds are not at the feeders, we know he has flown by. The bird almost hit Bill's head when the bird was diving at the feeder, and Bill was shovelling snow nearby. The mature bird was only here for a couple of weeks, but sat in the tree outside the kitchen window. I am posting pictures
