Two wintering, adult Ross's Geese photographed by Curtis A. Marantz on 3 February 2023 on the Lake Tamarisk Golf Course, Desert Center, Riverside County, California.
観察結果の詳細
I initially found the flock of geese foraging on the lawn in the southwestern part of the golf course, but these birds later moved over to the main lake. Admittedly, I did not study these birds all that carefully, but I did check them sufficiently well to identify with confidence. Both birds were noticeably small geese that were considerably smaller than the Canada Geese with which they were associated. These birds had stubby, triangular bills that tapered from a deep base base to a blunt tip along a culmen that was relatively straight. I did not see an obvious "grinning patch," but there may have been a subtle one. The forehead was steeper and the crown more strongly rounded than those of a Snow Goose, and the seemed shorter in proportion to the bird's size. The body was plump and full-chested, and the tail was quite short, but I largely failed to notice the wing structure. The legs were short and relatively stout, but I cannot now recall noting anything about the feet. Both birds were almost entirely white in coloration. The primaries contrasted as black, but I failed to study wings sufficiently well to see if the secondaries were white or black. The bill was a deep, pinkish-red color, and the legs were similarly colored. The eyes were dark, but their precise color eluded me.
