Small flycatcher, though at first looked like a slower, oversized kinglet (a later look next to a kinglet suggested that wasn’t what it was). Short bill, thin white eye ring, light wing bars on grayish olive-y body. Buffy chest and belly. Tail appeared straight edged (not notched) and white edged in a blurry photo I did capture. There appeared to be noticeable white in front of the eye (differentiating from Hammond's flycatcher). Near Langemann gate on canal around 33.79041° N, 106.88305° W, appeared to be moving north and south along ditch in Baccharis and coyote willow, pausing for 1-3 seconds on each perch (unlike 0.5 seconds of kinglet). I think this is the only somewhat expected empidonax for the refuge in January. Did not vocalize (or if it did, the water falling over the Langemann gate was louder).
