Song elements and "tik" calls given by an apparent male Pacific Wren recorded by Curtis A. Marantz on 3 December 2022 on the University of California campus, Riverside, Riverside County, California. This recording, made at 1:46 pm, followed by an extended period of time playback of Pacific Wren calls and Winter Wren song with the bird approximately 12 meters away and about ONE meter (not three meters, as noted in voice announcement) perched partially in the open atop a dense understory of ornamental acacia under Australian Willows just above the courtyard for the Entomology Building. In response to playback the bird would approach, often quietly and then begin calling, typically giving a harsh rattle. It gave "chimp" calls and a few times song elements only well after playback, and at times from moderately exposed perches in the understory. The bird was presumed to be a male on the basis of its emitting occasionally short series of song elements. This recording was high-pass filtered at -24 dB at 100 Hz and normalized to 3 db using Audacity 2.3.3. It was partly cloudy with a 50% cover of high, thin clouds, calm conditions (though likely sheltered from a mild breeze by the buildings), and temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s. This bird was initially found on 29 November 2022 by David Rankin.
