Ode to the Ruby-crowned kinglet. I have waited 4 years to be able to observe the tiny king's crown displayed so. This little tyrant was relentlessly guarding a small tree a yellow bellied sap sucker had riddled with holes which were now filled with sap and insects. I watched him over and over run-off any interloper who dared trespass on “his tree”. Other Rubys kept returning for a try at his treasure, sometimes four at a time but to no avail. Two yellow rumps and a black capped chickadee gave it a try but no dice There was one female ruby, however he let feed from the little wells of nourishment. When the battles would ensue she would drop down into the underbrush below until the intruders had been vanquished and then fly up and resume feeding. As kinglets can move so quickly and erratically besides being so tiny I was not able to capture the full glory of this little kings crown did gain a new respect and admiration of this species.
