Four males were seen. Female seen by Angela only. First male: popped up with eremomelas in a lush tree. Jeff called it out as Western Violet-Backed due to extent of black on throat. Upon further study over the course of several minutes: 1. Habitat/location - this is a regular area for the species, and females have been documented previously. Jeff says the Easterns are only found further down slope. 2. Rump appeared all purple. No turquoise-green. 3. More black on head, extending from chin onto almost all of throat, as opposed to chin only. 4. Appeared larger than Eastern, based on direct comparison to other sunbirds nearby. Second male: with female on opposite side of hill; surely a different bird. Third male: About half a kilometer further up the road. Appeared similar to the other two, but couldn't confidently identify this inidivudal. Fourth male: seen up the road in a tree with Black-billed Barbets.
