Continuing juvenile present since Aug 29. This tern was very active today, in flight for about half of the three hours I was present. It frequently dropped to the water, skimming the surface, but not the plunge-diving and penetration I've seen Forster's and common do. At one point it caught what appeared to be a crayfish. In flight the white secondaries were visible along with black tips to the primaries. The tail was long and deeply forked. When perched the legs were notably short. The dark carpal bar was present but was not as contrasting as common. Bill was all black except for a little orange at the base of the lower mandible. Head was rounded with extensive black from back of head to eye. This contrasted with a white forehead. The black came below eye and was fairly diffuse which seems to be an indication of arctic.
