Continuing individual, presumably one that arrived here last fall and is now over-summering at this location. Per the Pyle Monographs, the state has only had 3 previous summer records of Lesser Scaup. One wing is missing multiple inner primaries, best seen in ML471703531, which might be the reason he's here. This bird was basically in breeding plumage--the head, neck, breast, and undertail coverts were uniformly black; the sides and flanks were white with thin grayish vermiculation; and the mantle was white with similar vermiculation formed by broader markings, which imparted a darker look to the back. The plumage looked a little worn with some stray patches of brown and gray on the sides and mantle. The bill was a bluish-gray and the eyes were strikingly yellow. This guy was in the cove just west of what is labeled the "Hilo Cultural Center" on Google Maps, first resting on some branches and then diving.
