Adult. Large nightjar with buff spotting, buff scapular band, and prominent white throat marking. One of two birds found by Peter Brown who graciously stayed with the bird until we could get there. A poorly-known local species. There is a record from Leanyer Swamp from 1976 and eight previous records in Northlakes during the period 1990-1992. James Lambert flushed a bird on 11 May 2022 at dawn on the track to the pipeline and today Peter Brown was able to locate two roosting birds. The bird we saw (and Peter explained the same for the other) was roosting on stony ground which one would consider perfect Spotted Nightjar habitat. The question, is the species an overlooked regular dry season migrant to Darwin or is this part of the incredible influx of inland birds to coastal Darwin that is happening this dry season?
