This photo is included because it shows the light markings on the dark mantle feathers, which are here lifted a bit, exposing them to view. These feathers evinced relatively broad whitish tips, with the light color extending a bit backward along their edges (see Photo ML42734301 for convergent evidence on this point). The appearance of such feathers on the bird's back seem compatible with a juvenile bird, but, I suggest, a late juvenile. (You can find further discussion of age in association with other photos herewith). The bird's head is relatively back-lighted due to the sun angle, but it is obvious in this and other photos herewith that the head is quite dark. This is compatible with a juvenile of this species. (See standing-posture photos herewith for further evidence on this point.)

We had first visited this bird at about 11:00 AM. The sky was overcast, and the booby basically slept, except for one brief stand-up after which it immediately went back to sleep. We decided to return in the afternoon when, we surmised, the sky might be more sunny and the bird more active, providing thereby better looks and more opportunity for photos. We returned at about 1:00 PM, when the sun was out and the bird, indeed, was somewhat more active. On both occasions, though, we never saw it anywhere than on the tip of the diving board. On our return visit we spent perhaps 20 minutes there, observing and photographing the bird. Five photos and related commentary are provided herewith.
