Lilac-crowned parrot pair copulating (evening roosting with Red-crowned parrots)
観察結果の詳細
A pair (flew into view and landed as a lone pair) landed on an above tree canopy snag at 6:32PM. The lower bird began to beg and solicit copulation. The bird above, identical in appearance, copulated with the lower bird - its mate (see video). This is likely a mature, male-female pair based upon this behavior. Copulation may occur outside of the nesting season to strengthen pair bonds. Typically Red-crowned parrots on Oahu begin to lay in April, it is unknown what the nesting season is for Lilac-crowned parrots on Oahu. These two perched birds were at a great distance and required the equivalent of a 600+ mm lens to acquire the video included with this checklist. At 6:39 PM an additional two birds, flew by as a pair, loudly producing the distinctive species' squeaky contact flight call. I considered those Lilac-crowned parrots based upon their vocalizations. There were four other Amazona parrots flying with them that were making minor vocalizations and could have been Lilac-crowned parrots but I did not have enough vocal and visual evidence to classify them as such. All Lilac-crowned parrots are apparently part of the Red-crowned parrot population and evening roost with them. These Lilac-crowned parrots are most likely the same individuals Kellen Apuna discovered a few days previous to this checklist.
