viewed from gravel pullout on Hanshaw Rd; seen upon arrival in largest tree in near distance, about 50 yards to the east; but left quickly for about 10 minutes, then came back for an extended 15 minute scope viewing; The entire time the bird faced me so I can only report on the ventral view. The bird was approximately mockingbird sized with a dark hooked bill. There was a narrow white band on its forehead, which was quite weakly carried into the supercilium. The white eye ring was similarly weak, and was hard to see it as being completely circular, as distally it blended into the dark mask. The mask was narrow through the eye and then widened somewhat, bending to the auriculars; the crown was grey. The breast and belly were white, stronger just under the mask and bill. The tail was long and slightly rounded and fairly narrow. I could make out an irregular white pattern on the underside of the tail. The breast gave the impression of vertical light streaking, but that appeared to be an artifact of the way the feathers were fluffed out and maybe due to the frequent preening as well. One curiosity was a regular opening and shutting of its bill, maybe just a second at a time, not like a snap or a yawn. Something to do with digestion? At the end of the session, it flew down and returned to the same perch with a vole, and then flew away with it still in its bill.
