Poor photos. The birds were observed at the beach between the shore and the rock breakwaters near TAMUCC campus. When I drove by I saw two dark sleeping ducks. I parked and came back to look at these ducks. Both birds appear to be female Black Scoters. When they lifted their heads and started moving they had dark caps on the head and the cheeks were lighter than the rest of the dark body. Bill was thicker at the base then tapering to a thin bill. On one bird there was a light spot near the top base of the bill. When I observed the birds it was raining and the light was not very bright. The body appears to be uniformly dark but not really black. One bird appeared to have whiter cheeks when it turned to preen its side. The cheeks were by far the lightest color on both birds.
