Totally unexpected! I come from Quebec, Canada and we see this species often during migration but in the Amazon!!! 2 males and 2 females about 20-30 meters offshore on laguna anangu. Females brown with white line just before beak. Males greyish-white side with darker greyish back. Head dark purple/blackish, more blackish because of covered sky and light rain. Seen with binoculars and photographed with Nikon and 400 mm zoom by both my wife and I. All ducks were seen diving for short periods of about 12-20 seconds, typical for scaups. Obvious duck bill, paler than head, greyish and uniform, no rings. Very few ducks diving in Amazon. Southern pochard male much darker. Ring-necked duck has rings on bill. Ruddy and masked ducks totally different. I have a picture (blurry from distance but still very helpful), I just do not know how to attach it.
