Continuing birds that have been present here for at least three years now, often into mid-August.. One 10-second bout of clicking was heard about 15-20 minutes before dusk, then we started hearing several squealing calls not too unlike singles notes from a harrier. We also heard a lot of low growling calls from the rails. Eventually, maybe 10 minutes before dusk, one member of the party walked into the marsh south of the fence, where the cows like to tromp around, and flushed up an estimated total of 8 rails (more than that many encounters, since some were repeats). One black individual with only a little white in the wings appeared to be an HY bird. The others were adults. In one spot four flushed together (actually 2 pairs about 2-3 feet apart from each other) which seemed unusual. All were in a small area about 10 meters by 10 meters, and beyond about 20 m south of the fence no more rails were encountered. One rail was seen standing in the marsh before flushing.
