These notes include my basic description of bird activity while conducting on-site nest monitoring of the known Swainson's Hawk nest on Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach. There is no public access to this site, but I have been granted a base access badge to monitor the nest from within the base. Upon arrival at 1420, I found Dad sitting on a lamp post far to the west of the nest along the northern perimeter road. I photographed him several times before he took off out of sight. I then saw that both kids were sitting up in the nest and I drove forward (east) a little bit. Shortly thereafter, I looked up and saw a hawk flying overhead and then landing in the nest tree. I pulled over to the usual parking spot in front of the nest tree and saw that the bird had landed back in the tree and both kids were back again. The one that landed was banded as X1. X1 continued to fly around doing short flights and returning and alternately disappearing for a while. X2 stayed put just outside the nest on a snag. X1 finally returned at 1508 and both kids sat side by side on the same perch. X2 hopped down into the tree at about 1518 and went out of sight. X1 took off at 1525 and landed in a sycamore on the northern perimeter road. Both kids returned at 1537 before X2 took off northeast at approximately 1545. Neither parent was seen after my initial encounter with Dad. Mom was nowhere to be seen.
