Bird recognized as shrike from silhouette while driving by, so went back for a better look. Grayish shrike with broad black mask and short, stubby bill. Proportions also looked right for Loggerhead as opposed to Northern Shrike (which would be very unexpected this late in May). White patches in wing and in corners of tail visible when the bird made short sallies after flying insects, and longer flights down into grass on the north side of the road (edge of Diamond Hill Wetlands, a private conservation easement). I took some poor "through-the-windshield" photos as attached; had some problems with the auto-focus so these wound up blurry. The bird seemed to want to keep close to one set of utility poles' distance between itself and my vehicle on the side of the road.
