Adult male. Incredibly fortunate find and a WAY, WAY better bird for the park than Calliope. In 10 years of birding the park and assiduously attending the fenced garden every April and May this is my 1st encounter with a male here. Costa's is incredibly rare on the coastal plain away from the foothills and mountains. When I first walked up at 6:30 am I immediately heard the soft sputtering "sip" or chip calls of one followed moments later by the mosquito like "bzeeew" of a male. Briefly saw it feeding on the echiums only to have it disappear for an hour. It then suddenly reappeared alternating between feeding and perching in a bush. Difficult to locate as it usually was silent as it moved about. After about 15 minutes it flew off quarreling with an Allen's and I never heard or saw it again.
