Adult first found by BMt this am - and likely the same bird seen at Cape Race on 22 July 2016 Flew out into the fog a few times throughout the morning before leaving for good at 1215. The bird was obviously larger than the Common & Arctic Terns. It had a thick bill, light orange in colour, with a slight down curve. The black cap did NOT extend down to nape. Some white speckles in the black cap. The black cap met the bill above the gape. Black legs. Paler mantle than nearby COTEs. Called once when being dive bombed by other terns. In flight the upperside of the primaries were darker than the secondaries. Underside of primaries had dark trailing edge but not nearly as extensive black as a Caspian. At around 11:55 the Sandwich Tern appeared, and landed briefly next to the Royal Tern. Shortly thereafter both the Royal & Sandwich Tern flew out into the fog.
