This bird was in a deciduous tree in the yard at 300 Patterson (T corner of Taylor and Patterson). Intently feeding on oozing sap from a diseased portion of the limb. Basically moved less than 4 feet in 2 hours. Just slowly worked around the limb. Sapsucker with a red cap and throat. Zero red in the nape. All white on the nape. Red throat completely bordered by black. No sign of white at the chin. Plumage not crisply contrasting, kind of muddy. I don’t know anything specific about sapsucker molt but the red in this birds throat seemed faintly streaked with black and the “sapsucker” white wing “ovals” not shocking white somewhat muddled with gray. White stripe from face that wraps down along the side of the breast not at all distinct. Perhaps a first winter male?
